Fatima Al Daheri
United Arab Emirates
Emirati psychology student from Abu Dhabi, Fatima won Arab Film Studio when she was just 18-years-old. She welcomed the rare opportunities AFS provides for Emiratis in the film business.
Fatima won for her short film Something Called Fear. The film focuses on Adam, a high school student who struggles with anthropophobia - a fear of people. Beginning with his talk in front of his psychology class, the film retraces - through a series of flashbacks - his struggles with the phobia and its effect on his life.
“It was such a wonderful experience taking part in Arab Film Studio and meeting other like-minded contestants. I never knew how many other young Emiratis were interested in filmmaking until I took part in AFS.
“The process was so interesting and I couldn’t believe the amount I learnt in such a short space of time. I considered myself quite knowledgeable about film before I started the competition, but once boot camp began, I realized how much I didn’t know. It was a very hands-on program and we had unlimited access to some top industry professionals – something I couldn’t have experienced anywhere else.
“Without AFS I never would have been able to realize my dreams of becoming a filmmaker. Winning the overall prize provided me with the budget to turn my dreams Into reality. I’d strongly advise anyone who is serious about getting into the filmmaking business to seize this opportunity with both hands – you never know where it might lead to.” Fatima is currently working on her very own production while continuing her university studies.
